|Recommended: NoPlace had many maintenance issues upon move in- Managers are not in-contact and slow to resolve issues. — Still waiting for our leaking ceiling to be looked into half a month into our lease. Dangerous Our washer dryer utility we pay for is non existent as the dryer doesn't give heat and the washer doesn't drain. Management maintenance has still not taken the time to look at talk about fix it.
Management clearly did not inspect the fire alarms, utilities, the condition of the doors broken , and do not respond to maintenance requests.
Very frustrated so far as we pay big to live here- yet do not receive the care we deserve pay for.
|Recommended: YesSo quick to respond and helpful — My old apartment management was so slow to respond that I was absolutely shocked when Steve Brown responded to me so quickly about a parking matter Nicole Wall came right away to fix it in the morning and was so kind and helpful I will recommend Steve Brown Apartments to anyone I know looking for housing in Madison
|Recommended: NoNot Accommodating — I would tell them that I want to be at home as minimal as possible. The living room is the highlight, but most other aspects are in need of attention. We have a leaky ceiling along the fault line by the back bredroom, no insulation, and no markers for how to work the heating which we realized later was on the fuze box and turned off by the landloard with no indication to turn it back on. They brought us a new dishwasher that they left in our kitchen and never put in, and took about a week to fix our sink from overflowing due to the faulty dishwasher they left us with. In my room in particular I can hear the people above me cough as there is zero insulation, and feels like a icebox at the beginning of winter and the dial for the room heating does not tell you the temperature as it is partially broke. The dials on the air conditioner were broken as well. Outside my room is a staircase where I can hear people stomp up and down everyday that actually shakes my bed due to the lack of structural integrity. Our front door lock is faulty and was stuck for about a week before working randomly again. One of the mail keys they gave us would not unlock the mailbox and when we put in a maintanence request for a leaky sink they marked it as resolved without entering the apartment. When it came to me complaining about the people who lived above us due to excessive noise I mentioned the lack of insulation and the fact that I could hear them cough even, and make out every word they say to which they responded that they would give them a notice and a rug to try and fix the situation. They gave them no rug, and never sent them anything and I was told this by the same employee the next time I went in when he told me to my face that he had done nothing about my complaint. They still have no rug by the way as I was told that they didn't have rugs, and unfortunately after sending us a noise complaint to only me. The resident that has had so many issues with noise from the above apartment. They told my ass that if I was loud again I would get a 250 dollar fine for all the warnings we've received which were zero, besides the fact that the neighbors below us called the cops because we had friends over on halloween weekend when it was freak fest and everyone is having social gatherings. As someone trying to be productive and make the most out of my education this place has done nothing, but hinder my living in an environment that does not allow for the proper rest and mental space for someone trying to gain a professional medical degree. All in all its depressing how such a lovely place can feel so volatile.
|Recommended: NoNice location to live — In short, there are some problems with the apartment's insulation both sound and heat . However, the locations is quite good.
|Recommended: YesProperty is nice as long as you don't need maintenance ever. — I like the location and the building. Everything is nice enough and convenient. But in my lack of experience, maintenance is awful. We submitted a maintenance request, heard nothing, called after a week, nothing, submitted two more maintenance requests and they still never showed after weeks so I just decided to figure out how to repair a dishwasher myself.
|Recommended: No11 E Gilman Apt 1 — 30 Year old A C Unit and Terrible heating throughout. Bad and generally unhelpful maintenance. No regulation of parking in the rear. Drying machine that didn't dry our clothes in a 90 minutes drying cycle.
|Recommended: NoLet down by an apartment with great potential. — This apartment has a great location, view and size, but several other aspects left much to be desired...
PARKING Multiple times throughout our lease, the parking lot would fill up with other residents friends who do not have a parking pass. It seemed that there was no enforcement since the posted number for the towing company was disconnected. It really sucks coming home from work in the winter to a full lot when you pay full price for a spot.
APPLIANCES Several of our appliances had ongoing issues and remained a problem even after maintenance fixed them. The 30 year old AC unit in the wall doesn't seem to cool the room, but instead builds up a sheet of ice on the filter. The clothes dryer takes about 80-90 minutes to fully dry one load of laundry. We were told this is an issue with the duct work through the building, but nothing can be done.
MAINTENANCE The biggest problem we had with Steve Brown was dealing with the maintenance staff. When we opened a work order, it seemed their only concern was closing the ticket, rather than actually fixing the issue.
For example, when my room flooded, their solution was to plug in an industrial fan and dehumidifier. They left without a word, the ticket was closed and I was forgotten. My room flooded twice more after that. This was an extreme case but every time they were in the apartment to do a fix, this was the attitude. I should note that my rent was reimbursed for that month, which was the only positive moment of that whole situation .
Another instance is when we had a work order to fix our AC unit last August. They checked it out and just told us not to use it, closed the ticket. I called the office to see if anything could be done and they re-opened the work order. About 2 weeks went by and maintenance came in with no notice of entry. Nobody was home, besides my dog, who got out and ran away later returned home safely . Had we known about them entering that day, the dog would have been left in his kennel. There absolutely needs to be a policy requiring a 24 hour notice before any entry for this reason.
I had high hopes moving into this apartment, but I quickly found out that I was just another rent check to Steve Brown. Now that I've spent a year living this nightmare, I can say without a doubt that I will never be renting with them again.
|Recommended: YesClean, cozy, comfortable, welcoming, good location, friendly staff — Comfortable space that has very friendly staff who are available to help at all hours. The space came clean and cozy. Lots of great character and a nice building to live in.
|Recommended: YesBeautiful location and reasonable price for a downtown apartment. — The apartments might be old but the location is hard to beat.
